About Me

I research, I teach, I race, and I have fun with family, friends and most anyone I meet.

I serve as the Chair of the Marketing Department at Bentley University and was named The Netty Professor by Inc. Magazine in 2000, when Josh Hyatt wrote about my Internet Shopping 24/7 Research Project, where I set out to shop exclusively online for one year during the Dot-Com era and emerged as the world’s first prominent online shopping blogger.

My research has been awarded the MSI/H. Paul Root best paper prize from the American Marketing Association’s prestigious Journal of Marketing, and in December 2008, my Wall Street Journal Business Insights lead article, “The Secrets of Marketing in a Web 2.0 World” was the WSJ's most emailed article for two consecutive days. My research has appeared in numerous leading journals and it covers a variety of important marketing and e-commerce issues, including, the online customer experience, word of web, branding, Web 2.0, social media, multi-channel marketing, advertising, new product forecasting and optimization in decision making. In addition, I have served as a consultant and expert witness to both large and small organizations, and I am a frequent contributor to leading media, including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, CBSMarketWatch, NPR and PBS.

I earned my PhD at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and my a BA in Mathematics/Computer Science and an MBA at Boston University. Recently, I served as a Visiting Scholar at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas in Austin. Before joining the faculty at Bentley, I held appointments at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, Boston University’s School of Management, Babson College and Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

I race for the Austin, TX based Violet Crown, a fine group of people and cyclists from all walks of life! Many moons ago, and before I developed a worn out hip -- which is surprisingly fine for cycling, but not much else -- I participated in track & field in high school, junior olympics and college (javelin, shot put, 100, 4x100); and, I've run, and completed, the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon.
